5 Easy Steps to Buy Living Room Furniture

The kitchen might be heart of many homes, but the living room is just as much the central hub. Otherwise, why would it be called the room where people live? This is the room where we watch TV late at night, drink coffee or tea with company, and share stories about their day. The living room might be said to be the soul of the house.

This room serves as an area of both socializing and relaxing, and thus, one you want to do right. This means that choosing your furniture for your living room can make or break the room. Keep reading to help choose furniture that will make your living room both comfortable and beautiful with strong and lasting pieces of furniture.

1. Planning

There are a few questions about function that you will need to answer before you can begin:

  • Do you usually have a lot of guests at once? You may need larger sofas or more arm chairs to accommodate them all. Arrange furniture for conversation instead of having furniture against all the walls. If you have the space, you may consider having two distinct grouped areas.

  • What kind of room size do you have? This will dictate how much furniture you put in, and what size each piece should be. You’ll have to think about how these pieces should come together.

  • How big are your doorways? You will need to choose living room furniture that will fit.

2. Architecture and the Rest of Your Home

It’s important to consider windows and other architectural elements. Every room should have a focal point, so keep that in mind when you are choosing pieces for your living room. Choose furniture that goes with the rest of your house, or else you risk having your furniture detract from architectural details and styles rather than working with them. While your living room furniture doesn’t necessarily need to match with the other rooms in your house, it should complement or harmonize with it in some way.

3. Design around Theme and Colour

Colour is important in setting the mood. When you’re trying to choose furniture for your living room, you should think about how the colour of the furniture will make you “feel.”

Regarding theme, you don’t need to stick to a rigid theme, but you don’t want it to be totally without a theme, either, and look haphazardly put-together. No matter if you choose old world, contemporary, or modern theme, remember that you shouldn’t make it too perfectly matched. Instead, try to mix and match, especially if the rest of your room is symmetrical.

4. Add Accent Pieces

Once you’ve chosen your core pieces, you might want to consider accent pieces. These work to bring the room together, and are a fantastic way to bring in patterns or colours. Accent pieces also give you the opportunity to experiment with unexpected styles or details, if this is something that interests you.

5. Choose Solid Pieces with Luxurious, High-Quality Fabrics

You’ll want to choose high-quality and luxurious fabrics for the main pieces of your living room, like your sofa. This will help the room feel cozy without giving up its sophistication.  Due to the fact that living rooms get a lot of use, you’ll want to choose long-lasting, high-quality fabrics so that your pieces stay durable after a lot of daily use. Darker fabric will look better for longer than lighter ones.

When it comes to the wood in furniture, you’ll want to test to see if it’s scratch-resistant before you buy it. Try to draw a thin line with your fingernail across the wood. If you see a visible dent, it probably won’t look very nice for long. Avoid pressed wood, particleboard, and fibreboard construction.
