5 Invaluable Tips to Help Your Move Go Smoothly

Purchasing a new home is always an exciting time in your life. It’s a time for new beginnings and a fresh start, and the excitement can be pretty overwhelming. With that said there is the flip side of moving, and that’s the packing up of your current house and making sure everything is moved in an efficient and organized manner. It can be a rather large undertaking that is also rather time consuming, which is why so many people leave it until the last minute.
So rather than set yourself up for a stressful move, here are five invaluable tips that are sure to make your move go smoothly. This will take a lot of the worry and anxiety off your shoulders so you can enjoy this special time and look forward to the new home.
1. Purge Your House
It’s crazy how much “stuff” a person can accumulate over time. When it’s spread out around your house it may not even seem like that much, but as you start the packing process it will become pretty obvious rather quickly. Now here’s the thing, there is a good chance that you don’t need or even want everything you currently have, so why take the time to pack it up and move it?
An excellent place to start is with purging your house. You can go about it in a methodical way working on one room at a time. Ideally you want to create three piles – the keep, giveaway, and garbage pile. Once you get rid of the stuff you don’t want or need, you’ll find you have much less you actually have to move.
2. Start Early and Do Little Bits at a Time
One of the worst things you can do to yourself is leave the move to the last minute. Not only will you be rushing around like crazy, but this is also how items get left behind, lost, and even damaged. Instead it’s a good idea to start packing the moment your house sells, and even before if you can.
Rather than designate a packing weekend, you can do little bits at a time each and every day. You can give yourself a daily packing goal of say 15-30 mins. If you do this each day, it won’t feel like a chore, it won’t be overwhelming, and you won’t be rushing around at the last minute.
3. Have the Proper Packing Supplies On-Hand
There is nothing worse than having the energy and time to get packing done only to realize you don’t have the proper supplies on-hand. You’ll want to be sure you’ve got a good supply of boxes, packing tape, blankets, and bubble wrap so that when you get a few spare moments you are ready to pack.
As an added tip be sure to label all the boxes as you go as this will help to identify items that are fragile, and it will make unpacking in the new house a lot more efficient.
4. Rent Your Moving Truck Well in Advance
As you start to look around at all the boxes you are packing up, you will get a better sense of what sized moving truck you are going to need. It’s always better to get something bigger than you think you’ll need, rather than renting a truck that ends up being too small. Remember, it needs to be big enough to fit your largest items of furniture. Now these trucks do tend to book up rather fast, especially on weekends at the beginning and end of the month. This means you will want to book yours well in advance.
5. Leave it to the Professionals
At the end of the day there is no way around it, packing is a real chore and not something anyone looks forward to. What this means is that it may just be the best course of action to hire professional movers and leave all the packing, heavy lifting, and organizing to them.
