Finally moving out of your parent’s home? Getting your first apartment is a nerve-wracking and yet thrilling affair. You have tons to do and yet so little time. It’s easy to forget some of the stuff you need to buy or get done. Below, we go over some of the must haves for new apartment.
It’s easy to treat artwork as an afterthought when moving into a new apartment. To the contrary it is a central part of a home’s décor and can transform a dull room into a vibrant and peaceful one. Your new apartment deserves a few pieces of art. You don’t even have to spend a ton of money to find something that works for your space.
- A Rug
A rug not only makes your space more cozy and complete, it also helps cover up unsightly floors that you may not be able to change in a rental. Get one with a flattering pattern that feels soft underfoot.
You’ll need to mop your apartment at some point. There are a variety of mop available at unbelievable prices. Should you go for the flanged mop with pads, make sure to stick to the washable one rather than disposable. Get one that comes with an empty bottle attached to allow you to mix your own cleaner or use hot water.
- A Place to Sit
Unless it’s a short term rental, it would be a nice touch to add a signature piece of furniture to what you already have. You can always add a love seat or even that special sofa seat you’ve been eyeing to augment what’s already available. If you’re starting from scratch, then you might want to consider getting a set of comfy chairs or a small settee.
- Cleaning Rugs
You need a bundle of cheap rugs that you don’t mind getting stained. While you could always use paper towels, rugs come in handy in that they can take a beating and are by far much cheaper overall. You can always purchase some pretty ones for show, but you can be sure they’ll turn grey with time.
While you could always use the blinds that the apartment came with, you have to agree that they’re somewhat unsightly. Adding curtains to a room can add some much-needed color and provide some privacy. When hung properly they can actually make the ceiling seem higher.
- Good Lighting
The kind of lighting you choose can make a big difference in a room. Good lighting adds some personality and practicality to a room by complementing the theme and making it look more spacious.
You will need at least one bookshelf in your new apartment. You don’t have to hold any books in it. You can always use it as extra storage space or for décor. This is one of the must haves for new apartment.
- Basic Tools
You don’t need a lot of tools. A few basics such as a standard screwdriver, a hammer, a level, measuring tape, pliers, vice grip, wire cutter or utility knife, duct tape and electrical tape. These should come in handy around the house whenever you want to fix something.
You’re probably attached to your current mattress. But after 10 years of great service and now that you’ve opened a new chapter of your life, it’s time to upgrade. Invest in a mattress that you’ll love going home to everyday for the next few years.
